Review: Best Gluten Free FISH & CHIPS in Brisbane

Who hasn’t craved the battered or crumbed fish & chips experience when seeking easy take away options at the beach or the park, only to have to make do with grilled fish and salad (often with no sauces) while the rest of your buddies tuck into the oily fried counterparts, with you looking on wistfully. Well. No need to miss out anymore my coeliac and gluten free friends. So many takeaway fish & chip outlets are now adding gluten free batter and gluten free crumbs to their menu. Fantastic. As they are not all coeliac safe however, I thought it would be a great idea to showcase a few of the Brisbane venues that are really looking after us by providing a separate fryer for their chips and all fried gluten free products. Some caution still needs to be applied of course, depending on how sensitive you are to traces of gluten, as they still prep flour covered foods on the premises*.

Yabbey Road Redcliffe.

These guys do the whole greasy batter thing well…styled after the English version of fish & chips. Expect plenty of batter and plenty of oil. I may have over ordered somewhat on my first visit (trying to sample every single fried item I have had to miss out for 16 years), so it did leave me with a heavy yuk feeling, but the next time, lesson learnt, I indulged in just one piece of fish and some chips, and it was heaven!

Location: 133 Redcliffe Pde Redcliffe.

Open Mon-Wed/Fri-Sun 10.30am-7.30pm and Thurs 10.30am-7pm

Fishmongers Wife East Brisbane

I have not eaten here but have seen rave reviews on social media about their gluten free fried options so worth a visit if you live nearby. They have an extensive gluten free menu, are very coeliac aware and are licensed (bonus!). I look forward to checking them out!

Location: 48 Orchard St Hawthorne.

Open 7 days 12noon-8pm.

Salty Sailor EAT STREET Hamilton

These guys have crafted a regular following for their moist battered fish and crunchy chips. Worth checking out next time you feel a little Eat Street craving kicking in! Best to arrive close to opening time as it can pretty packed.

Woody’s Seafood Takeaway Woody Point

These guys do an amazing crumbed version of the freshest fish and their chips were some of the best I have had. They do point out their inability to be particularly coeliac safe so be careful depending on your sensitivity. I had no issues. Also be warned, they tend to close much earlier than their advertised opening times (usually by 5.30/6pm).

Location: 42 Oxley Ave Woody Point.

Open Tues-Sun 10am-6.30pm

Sunshine Coast:

98Fish Buderim

Again, I have not made it to test out this one myself but have been assured by the gluten free community that their gluten free options (95% of the menu!!) are amazing and their coeliac safe kitchen practices are very thorough. They have a whole page on their website explaining how they reduce cross contamination for coeliacs. I can’t wait to visit.

Location: 347 Mons Rd Forest Glen.

Open Sun-Wed 11am-7pm and Thurs-Sat 11am-7.30pm.

Mooloolaba Fish and Chips Mooloolaba

We enjoyed an awesome meal of very fresh fish here not that long ago. I loved the gluten free crumbed version of their fish and I was in food ecstasy over the crumbed pineapple fritter…first one in 16 years! They pride themselves in looking after the gluten sensitive with not just a separate fryer but also careful kitchen practices. Be warned though, while we LOVED the meal, they are at the more exxie end of the fish and chips price point, but I guess they have a pretty steep rent to pay situated conveniently on the Mooloolaba board walk.

Location: 4/121 Mooloolaba Esplanade Mooloolaba

Open 7 days.

Enjoy  🙂  Jane x
