GUEST BLOG: Huge thanks to The Aussie Coeliac Ashlee Adams for sharing some of her extensive gluten free intel with us from her home town of Melbourne to steer us in the right direction to find the perfect spots for a little gluten free brunching! Enjoy x
The Melbourne Brunch scene is considered one of the best in Australia. However, for those with Coeliac Disease it can be an overwhelming experience. Wading through all the new cafes and pop ups, asking about gluten free cross contamination, triple checking ingredients and studying the food like it’s a piece of art in the louvre…it’s exhausting, to say the least, and a bit intimidating. Therefore, I thought I’d share my top five Melbourne brunch spots safe for a Coeliac.
102 Henkel Street, Brunswick
Behind the tuck-shop style front is a modern and sleek café. Adorned in luxurious shades of grey and black, it walks the line between classy and casual perfectly. In addition to their fully gluten free premises, Café Henkel also have accreditation with Coeliac Australia for further peace of mind. With a wide variety of options, all safe for a coeliac, you will be spoiled for choice. They now also have a function room so you can do much more than just brunch!
MOM Café (Market on Malvern)
388 Malvern Road, Prahran
Looking for gluten free food that is good for you too? At MOM Café the menu is created by a team of naturopaths, dieticians and nutritionists. Their insight into dietary needs results in a menu that is entirely gluten free with options for yeast, dairy, nut and fructose free, as well as vegan, paleo and FODMAP friendly options. It might not be very brunchy, but I definitely could go their Roast Tasmanian salmon fillet which you can order from 11am.
10/436 Burke Road, Camberwell
With a son diagnosed with Coeliac Disease the owners of Wellzones GF faced a challenging year. The outcome of this year though was well worth it, developing bakery and bread items that are gluten free without sacrificing the flavour. Wellzones GF is not only 100% gluten free, they are also refined sugar free and accredited with Coeliac Australia. Their cakes are absolutely divine, but my favourite thing is just being able to pick up a sandwich.
393 Camberwell Road, Camberwell
Starting off in Albert Park, Foddies have been on a rollercoaster of a journey. Now situated in Camberwell, the one thing that has never changed is the quality of food and level of dedication to those with food intolerances. With a focus on low FODMAP cuisine, Foddies do have a few menu items that are low gluten. However, the staff have a thorough understanding of cross contamination with methods in place to avoid it.
1/173-177 Barkley Street, St Kilda
Whilst during the week Hemp Kitchen is an elegant dinner spot, come the weekend their doors are open for brunch. Starting from 10am you can choose from pancakes, toast, porridge and more. I definitely recommend the Spanish Claypot. Thankfully, Hemp Kitchen is 100% gluten free and accredited with Coeliac Australia to ensure all of their food is Coeliac Safe.
With the foodie scene ever-expanding and gluten free options in Melbourne becoming more prevalent, I look forward to exploring the new brunch options that present themselves in the future. For now though, I hope you get to enjoy some of these beautiful brunch venues. Ashlee 🙂
